Focus :: A One Word Revelation

Five Minute Friday

It’s that time again! Five-Minute-Friday with Lisa-Jo where we write for five minutes – no edits, no revisions, only pure thoughts streaming for five minutes! Thank you for joining me here today!

Back in January I joined the “One Word” movement that swept over Twitter and blog-world. It may be a movement that has been around for years, but for me it was new, and I enthusiastically jumped aboard.

I don’t even remember the original One Word I chose and then changed only a few days into the new year. But now, eight months in, I see clearly why God told me that word just wouldn’t fit this time. Maybe next year, but this year my One Word was supposed to be Focus.

And from that moment on the word Focus came to me time and time again through sermons, Bible passages, conversations, motivational talks, and even through Five Minute Friday.

When I hear God so clearly I get all “Wow, He really does talk to me!” inside and then realize how deep my unbelief. He has definitely shown that His goal for me this year was to do just what He said all those months ago: Focus.

I expected Him to show me how to Focus my time, my energy, my passions, and my purpose so that I would be intentional for Him, striving not after my self but after His plan for me.

What I didn’t expect was Focus into the deep parts of my soul that need to be dealt with before He can use any of the above fully.

He has Focused my eyes on negativity that has invaded the deepest parts of my being for a while now. Then there is the pride and the anger, too.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Psalm 139:23-24:

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

This year Focus led me down a way everlasting.

What is something that you need to Focus on more in your life?

My word for the year is Finish…but it is so closely tied to Focus! Praying He continues to make himself known to you as the year progresses. So glad you were before me at Five Minute Friday today.

Thank you, Tammy! I need Finish, too. I have a hard time finishing.

“This year Focus led me down a way everlasting.”…Oh my goodness how I love that!
your one word and mine go hand in hand. Mine is “Intentional” and He has been ripping me apart back to my bare bones to show me how to do this thing called life intentionally. It’s been a painful year if I’m being honest, but I’m finally starting to see how far I’ve come…where He’s bringing me…what a joy!

What a great 5 minute write, Brenda!

Nikki, I am so happy to hear that you are experiencing joy! Yes, being and staying intentional is so hard when you really think about it! They do go hand-in-hand. Now I’m thinking about what my word should be for next year?? 🙂

I liked this word too for Five Minute Friday. Made me laugh that the 5 minutes that I chose to sit and write were ones full of noise and activity in my house. 🙂

How funny, Libby! But sometimes it just takes a focus of the mind. I can be good at just tuning out for a moment! Thank you for stopping by!

My word a couple of years ago was “focus”. I didn’t think that I actually accomplished “focus”, but maybe I did. I am more focused on Him now than I ever have been before, but I can also see just how far I have to go! I also have your unbelief problem – when I actually see or hear Him, I think WOW. But I should be thinking WOW all the time! So, I’m always looking for WOW moments now, because I know they are always there. He is so good to me! Happy Sunday!

I agree! It is hard to stay focused. I think it’s a work in progress. I always want to write everything God says/does for me down so that I don’t forget but usually I’m not in a position to write it or I forget to write it. He is so good! Thank you for commenting!!

Based on my inability to answer your question, I’m thinking I need to focus on what I need to focus on. Sometimes I just start going at stuff willy nilly and that doesn’t accomplish much. Truthfully, I really want to be more intentional in teaching Thomas, but the days slip by so fast!

Mary Beth, I hear ya!! 🙂 I have a bit of ADD brain I think in that regard. Even tasks around the house – I’m here and there and everywhere! I need to focus, and I can see where baby girl is going to challenge me in that area! 🙂
