I have this friend who has something I want so badly but will never have. She has a lot of women in her life.
My friend has a sister. She has some aunts. She still has her mom. And she even has her grandmother. Not to mention the women on her husband’s side of the family, too.
What makes them even more of a blessing is that they all live fairly close to her, they’re all healthy, and they all spend a lot of time with her and her children.
I need to let you in on a small detail of my life that you may not already know. I have no older women in my family. None. If there’s a matriarch it’s me. When I tell people this I’m afraid they think I’m trying to have a pity-party for myself. Honestly, I’m not. I’m just stating a fact.
I look at my friend’s life, and I envy her opportunity to “just stop by” her grandmother’s house or “just spend the night” at her mom’s. I wish my mom could “just play” with the girls while I ran to an appointment or I had someone to “just call real quick” to get advice on how to handle the temper tantrum that erupted at the store earlier in the day.
It’s hard being a young mom without older women in you family. Scratch that, it’s hard being a woman without support from older women period.
Having always been an independent person, only recently have I realized the necessity of older women in my life. I want this for my daughters. Of course, I hope that I am healthy and strong enough to live a long life with my daughters as they grow into women. But I also know that they will need more than just me.
So I began praying a prayer over my daughters that you’ve probably never thought of.
I pray for their future mother-in-laws. And if they do not get married, because not everyone is called to marriage, I pray for older women to come into their lives.
My prayer goes something like this:
Lord Jesus, thank you for my girls! I love them so very much! I want them to have so much love in their lives. I want them to be surrounded by women who love them deeply and love them well. Women who point them to you always. So today I pray for their future mother-in-laws.
I ask you, Lord, for the blessing of bringing my daughters mother-in-laws who can mother with me, mentor with me, and help me lead these these one-day women into deeper walks with you.
I pray that you will bless my girls with mother-in-laws who have strong relationships with you, who are spiritually and emotionally healthy, and who love them like they love their own children.
I pray that my girls’ future mother-in-laws will understand and accept Genesis 2:24. I pray there is not any jealous, but true gratefulness for my daughters in their families.
Lord, you are already in my daughters’ futures, and you already know who these women will be. I pray for them right now. I pray that right now as they raise their sons they are filled with your Spirit. I ask you to strengthen these women and their marriages. I ask you to give them wisdom. Help them to seek you to raise up godly men. I pray that you give them rest in you, too.
And Lord, if it is not your will for my girls to be married, I pray that you will bring them a woman who will walk alongside them to love, pray, and teach them. I pray they are blessed with mentors who are willing to invest in their lives and befriend them. Surround them with a strong Christian community of women.
Thank you, Lord, for hearing me, and for loving me and my girls!
Have you ever prayed for your daughters’ s future mother-in-law?
