Several months ago I watched this YouTube video by Jessica Rey, and I thought it was so intriguing. Since having my baby girl, I’ve been conflicted about wearing a bikini. Yes, I do own bikinis. I have worn bikinis. But when I started thinking about buying a swimsuit for my nine-month-old baby girl my thoughts began to change.
Why would I buy a bikini for my baby? Or my two-year old? Or my three-year old? Or seven-year old? Or really any age for that matter?
What does that say about how I’m portraying her – this little baby who isn’t old enough to choose her clothing herself?
And am I saluting our “culture” by putting her in a bikini under the excuse “Well, everyone else does it?” What does that teach her?
What is my choice of a swimsuit for her communicating about how I view her body, how society views her body, and how she should view her body?
What’s the real purpose?
All of these questions eventually led me back to myself. What message will it send my baby girl when she’s six years old and I don’t allow her to wear a bikini, but mommy is wearing one.
That doesn’t work. So I stopped wearing bikinis.
As I processed through this, I answered the question, “Is It Wrong to Wear a Bikini?”, in a post I wrote for MoretoBe.com where I’m a monthly contributor.
