Do Christian Singles Have to Go to Church? {Part 2}

Yesterday we started the conversation answering the question, “Do Christian singles have to go to church?”, and the conclusion I drew was, yes, Christian singles should go to church. I’m sure that’s not surprising.

But today let’s talk more about this question:

What’s in it for me?

God only gives us teaching and commands to benefit us and make us complete through Him. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

Going to church is good for us for two main reasons.

One, going to church connects us with other Believers. Other Believers are one of the three cords in our triple braid. When we are surrounded with like-minded people, people to encourage us and to hold us accountable, the enemy has a harder time getting us to believe his lies. It’s when we’re isolated and disconnected that he schemes start to take root.

This is especially true for people who are single.

Think about it. Has there been a time when you were in a relationship of some sort and you knew deep down that something just wasn’t right about it, but it was easy and fun and at least you had someone, so you rationalized through it and it continued? Then on top of that it was easy to hide because all you had to do was go back to your apartment, alone, and continue the madness.

I know this scenario all too well, and that’s why I’m telling you that isolation from other Believers will eventually become your downfall. God never meet for us to do life alone. We were made for community even though community is sometimes hard. A Bible-believing, Gospel-centered church body is protection against the enemy.

Secondly, the church needs you. Every Christian receives spiritual gifts at the moment of conversion. Your spiritual gifts were given to you so that you can use them to serve in the church. Regardless of your marital status, other people in the church need you. They need your giftedness. They need God’s calling on your life.

Plus, serving is an added bonus for you! It’s cliché, but you honestly do get more than you give often times.

But what if I just have no desire?

If you are a Christian, and you are in a place where you have no desire to go to church – for whatever the reason – I would ask God to show you the deeper roots in your adamancy against it. The biggest concern is the heart issue behind not wanting to do His will.

Ask Him to take away any false beliefs you have about church and any fear you have. Ask Him to replace negative church experiences you’ve had with positive ones. Ask Him to give you courage and boldness to begin the process of finding a church to attend and become a member. Ask for His wisdom and discernment. No, not every church is good or right for every person. And some churches I would argue are not good for any Believer! However, I know that through prayer God will give you the wisdom and discernment to make a choice on a church He wants you to serve in and learn from.

No church is perfect or ever will be because imperfect people are serving in them. There’s no point in looking for perfection. Just look to God, trusting Him, that His Word is true and for your benefit.

Where are you now on the church attendance discussion?
