For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. Romans 1:20
Once upon a time I had the opportunity to visit Hawaii. By no means am I a world traveller, but I have travelled some, and for that I am grateful. Of the places I have been, Hawaii is the most breathtaking . . . and indescribable.
Looking out over cliffs onto crashing waves, seeing lush forests and trees in shades of green that couldn’t possibly exist in this fallen world, walking on hot, molten lava while watching its awakened brother slither slowly next to my feet.
There are no words to do the pictures in my mind justice, and every time I think about those eight lily-like pads in the middle of that great big pond I wonder . . .
How can any eye peer onto this masterpiece for even a second and not believe in God?
For in the masterpiece there is God – his eternal power and divine nature. No wonder it’s so majestic.
And from in the masterpiece is my understanding – knowledge – of a God who encompasses all of this.
When I came back from Hawaii I wanted to move there. Seriously. I half-thought about moving there to teach. I had it all reasoned out. It’s an expensive place to live, but I wouldn’t need any money for fun – my fun would be in the beauty around me.
What is wonderful is that by default I am surrounded by God’s invisible qualities no matter where I am in his masterpiece. They may not be as high or deep or wide, but there still there, right in my backyard. In the intricacy of the turtle’s design or the pattern of behavior from the birds as they eat their breakfast.
