Today’s the day! We’re kicking off our Summer Online Bible Study and replacing lies we believe with God’s truth! It’s not too late for you to join! Head over to the Facebook group here.
So this is how it will work. Each Wednesday I will introduce the chapter for the week and post the PDF handout that includes the scripture readings and homework. I encourage you to write out the truth for each Bible verse on the handout. If you don’t want to write out the truths for every Bible verse for ever lie, then just write out the truths for the lies you struggle with personally. Then, join the conversation in the comments here or in the private Facebook group.
Today we are starting with chapter 2:
Download the handout here –> Lies Women Believe About God Handout
In chapter 2, Nancy Leigh DeMoss introduces six common lies that women believe about God:
- God is not really good.
- God doesn’t love me.
- God is just like my father.
- God is not really enough.
- God’s ways are too restrictive.
- God should fix my problems.
As we move into the chapters that discuss the individual lies we believe, remember that this is not an exhaustive list. There might be deeper, more specific lies you believe in each of these broader lies. So as you read, ask God to help you go deeper and really dig into the lies you believe.
For example, one lie I find myself believing often is that God is punishing me. This lie would probably fall under “God is not really good” or “God doesn’t love me.”
Many times when something’s not going right in my life I immediately think that I must have done something wrong to cause it to happen. Now there are consequences for sin. Sometimes I have done something wrong, and I’m living with the consequences. However, God’s not punishing me. He’s disciplining me. There is a difference. Punishment is a penalty for a past action. Discipline is training for future correct action. God disciplines us out of His love for us.
I’ve come to realize that thinking I must have done something wrong and God is punishing me, is actually a form of pride. Indirectly I believe that I am capable ,in my own power and through my own good works, to make my life right and perfect. It’s a belief that I am in total control of my circumstances. This lie has also led me to perfectionism.
Using Nancy Leigh DeMoss’s steps to respond to the Truth (p. 60-61), my journal would look like this:
AGREE with God:
Every time something goes wrong in my life, I believe God is punishing me. By believing this I am saying that God is not really good and doesn’t love me.
ACCEPT responsibility:
This lie has manifested itself in my life through a spirit of pride. By believing this lie, I am living like I am in complete control of the circumstances in my life. My performance becomes more important than God’s grace. This lie has also led me to perfectionism.
AFFIRM the Truth:
God, I know you are good and do good, so teach me your statutes (Psalm 119:68).
I give thanks to you, Lord, because I know you are good and your steadfast love endures forever (Psalm 136:1).
Jesus, I know you came to earth not to condemn me, but to save me through you (John 3:17).
ACT on the Truth:
In light of God’s Truth that I have learned, I will remember that there is no condemnation in Jesus. He took my condemnation from me, and because He loves me He wants to teach me His statutes so that I can experience life abundantly. Every time the lie that I am being punished comes into my mind, I will meditate on these truths.
ASK God to help me walk in the Truth:
Dear God, thank you for your Truth, for your Word! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read your Word, study it, and learn it. Please bind the enemy of my thoughts that tells me You are punishing me. I know this is a lie. Lord, I know you are good. I know you love me! Help me, God, please help me to retain your Word, and please recall it to my mind when I need it. Thank you, Lord.
Okay, your turn. Take out your journal and ask yourself, “What lie am I believing about God?” Then, go through the steps to overcome this lie. If you feel comfortable, share with us in the comments. What lie are you believing about God?
