Weekend Prayers and Links

I was in Georgia for most of the week last week visiting my best friend since third grade! Yes, third grade! And the coolest part is we still talk almost everyday. So that is the reason I didn’t post a Weekend Prayers and Links last week. But I’m back this week, and I want to share with you something I learned today.

Weekend Prayers and Links for Single Women

On Thursday mornings I go to a mini Bible study of sorts. I say mini because there’s no homework. Just a speaker and round circles full of women talking and of course, food. Today when I went the lesson was on the story of Moses.

Now, most of us have heard the story of Moses before, and I am no exception, however, this time Moses caught my attention in a new way. Don’t you love it when God does that? You can read the same passage of scripture a hundred times and on the hundred and one time the Holy Spirit gives you new insight. God is awesome like that.

Well, what struck me about Moses today is that when God spoke to him in the burning bush, he had just fled to Midian after killing a man. I knew Moses killed a man. But today I understood that this didn’t stop God from using him.

I shared at my table how I got married at 32 years old, so I’ve now had the experience of singleness and marriage. And much to my dismay, for me, marriage is really, really hard. Many times I wonder if God is punishing me, if I did something wrong. If I am getting pay-back for the slime balls I dated, and continued to date. I wonder if I married the wrong person, if I made a mistake. I wonder if I should have just stayed single.

These are raw, honest feelings. This is real life.

Today, though, as I read about Moses, again, I wondered if he thought the same thing. I mean, he had just killed a man and then God was telling him to go to Pharaoh, who he was running from, and ask him to release the Israelites from slavery. Surely Moses was thinking that he was being punished, too.

However, quite the opposite was happening. God was using Moses, and his heritage as an Israelite and his insight into Pharoah’s palace, to bring about one of the most iconic events in history.

A Lot of Prayer

Often we see the trials we are going through, the season of life we’re in, or a task God has given us as a punishment of some sort. We think, like Moses possibly did, that God is paying us back for our sin. However, in reality, it’s no punishment at all. Instead, it’s an honor that God is using us in His big story.

Moses is one of many examples in the Bible of how God works all things out for good. Moses committing murder was the catalyst for him running to a place where God spoke to him. As evil as that act was, God worked it for good.

You and I are no different. God is using each of our individual stories to accomplish His greater purpose. And those sinful pasts we have, He’s using those, too.

Today I pray that we stop resenting our assignments from God, our circumstances, and instead start viewing them as ordained parts of His story. And the simple fact that we are a part of His story, makes our position a place of honor. So let’s feel honored that God has called us to this place, today.
