A few weeks ago I was in the Christian bookstore, and I put this picture on Instagram.
I commented that this bottom shelf is the only one with books for single women. There are literally cases of books for women in general, and especially for moms, but only a handful for single women. I know it is not the bookstore’s fault. They are supplying the books that are written for single women. There just aren’t that many authors writing on singleness. This makes me sad. I wish there were more because the single years impact the futures of women, marriages, and children in significant ways that we do not address.
All of this is to say that when Allison K. Flexer, the author of the new book Truth, Lies, and the Single Woman: Dispelling 10 Myths, emailed me and asked me to do a review and giveaway, I said, “Yes! Of course!” I am thrilled that there is another quality book for single women, and I am thrilled to support it.
I wanted to run this giveaway this week, the last week of my month-long series, 31 Days of Interviews with Single Women Making a Difference, so in complete honesty I have not read this book cover-to-cover. I have perused it and skimmed it, and I definitely want to read it all the way through. I just haven’t had the time yet.
What first caught my attention was the title and subtitle of the book – Truth, Lies, and the Single Woman: Dispelling 10 Common Myths. This past summer I hosted an online Bible Study. We read the book Lies Women Believe and the Truth that Sets Them Free by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. (You can find the posts from the study along with downloads in this post.) There is no doubt that the enemy bombards women with lies. It’s been this way since the beginning, hasn’t it? But single women struggle with believing lies that are unique to their season of life, and I am so glad that Allison wrote this book to address them.
Truth, Lies, and the Single Woman is divided into ten chapters – one for each lie single women believe. Each chapter addresses the lie using stories and testimonials from single women, and then it discusses truth from the Bible to replace those lies.
Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect!
Lie #1: Because no one has chosen me, I’m not valuable.
Lie #2: God has forgotten about me.
Lie #3: Sex outside of marriage is okay.
Lie #4: My past can’t be forgiven.
Lie #5: I’m not beautiful.
Lie #6: Getting married will solve all my problems.
Lie #7: There is something wrong with me.
Lie #8: The church values married people more than me.
Lie #9: It’s too late for me, so I should settle.
Lie #10: My life is on hold until I find a spouse.
Each chapter ends with an organized synopsis of the lie, what women often tell themselves concerning the lie, and then a list of Truth from the Bible you can use to replace the lie. This makes it convenient to create scripture cards to memorize the scriptures you need the most or to pray specific verses.
At the end of each chapter there’s also a place for you to journal your thoughts.
What’s super fun is at the end of the book. There’s a section called “Single Men Respond”. Single men comment on questions regarding lies they believe. The author, Allison K. Flexer, also includes her own commentary. This is quite interesting!
I’m giving away one autographed copy of Allison K. Flexer’s book Truth, Lies, and the Single Woman: Dispelling 10 Myths! However, even if you don’t win this copy, I highly recommend you picking up a copy yourself!
Be sure to enter the giveaway below!
Now you’re turn! Of the lies above, which one do you struggle with believing the most?
**I received a copy of the above book free of charge in exchange for an honest review. All of the comments and opinions are my own. This post also includes affiliate links. See my disclosure policy here.
