Egg Salad, Azaleas, Ferns, and the Masters

This past weekend possibly ended John’s favorite weekend of the year. That is if you don’t count every weekend in the fall that UGA is playing football. Masters weekend.

For those of you not from the south, or who aren’t remotely interested in golf, the Masters is arguably the most prestigious, and most beautiful, golf tournament of the year. It’s in our home state of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia, where my sister-in-law lives, nonetheless, and in encompasses pretty much everything southern. Including egg salad, azaleas, and ferns.

Egg Salad, Azaleas, Ferns, and the Masters

There are plenty of things you don’t know about your spouse when you get married. Like how he leaves crumbled up, used and wet paper towels all over the kitchen counters instead of throwing them away. Or how he refuses to get rid of even one jumbo-sized, plastic souvenir cup from a UGA football game. But I knew about the Masters, and every year Masters weekend is reserved for being glued to the T.V. Supposedly he bought the HD T.V. just to watch the Masters. Oh really? Well, it has come in handy for plenty of football games, too.

So this weekend that’s exactly what we did. We watched golf. And our toddler girl watched more Mother Goose Club than I care to admit.

One of our azaleas in our backyard bloomed just for the occasion, and we did get our ferns hung on the front porch – that is after going to the Farmer’s Market and seeing they only had ones with metal hangers. Don’t get metal hangers. If your ferns get big enough, which ours do, the metal hangers will break. They’ve done it every year for years. This year we wised-up and went to Lowes for some with plastic hangers.

And to commemorate the occasion I even made a knock-off Masters egg salad recipe from PlainChicken.com. The Masters is known for their southern staples of egg salad sandwiches and pimento cheese sandwiches. I don’t know that it tasted like the real deal, but it was worth a shot and tasted yummy to me.

The only adaptations I made was that I halved it and didn’t add celery because I didn’t have any. I also put sliced tomatoes and bacon on the sandwiches because, why not?

This was pretty much a consolation prize after John sent me a picture of a Facebook post saying how a friend’s wife got her husband tickets to the Masters. I immediately went into, “Oh now I’m a horrible wife because I can’t get seemingly non-existent Masters tickets for my husband.” That is unless I wanted to pay a zillion dollars.

But lo and behold I did come across a friend whose husband had Masters tickets. “Had” is the key word here. He already sold them all. But at least I tried, and so my effort and egg salad for lunch earned me some bonus points.

Maybe God’s good graces in the form of Masters tickets will be upon us next year. Otherwise, we’ll be having egg salad and an HD T.V. again.
