  • Why I’m Giving Up on Smocked Dresses and Big Bows

Why I’m Giving Up on Smocked Dresses and Big Bows

Nothing sends a southern mama’s heart aflutter like hearing the words, “It’s a girl!” Her next thought is “smocked dresses and big bows.” Fantasies of being a girl-mom come true, and she praises Jesus she doesn’t have to peeve a baby son (or her husband) with second-rate Jon-Jon’s.

I know this because I am one of those southern mama’s. We’re a little obsessed. Finding a gently used Strasburg dress at a consignment sale sets us up for a week of rainbows and sunshine. Then if we’re blessed with two girls the fun starts all over – matching dresses!

  • Differences Between Georgia and North Carolina

Differences Between Georgia and North Carolina

We’ve been back in Georgia for about four months now, and it’s been fun noticing the differences between living in the two states. When we lived in North Carolina we could always tell the culture was different from Georgia, even though both states are in the south, but it was hard to explain those differences.

Here’s a fun post about what I’ve noticed. And if you’re familiar with life in Georgia and North Carolina maybe you can relate.

  • Why We Give Our Daughters Three Names

You may have gotten a small word that a few weeks ago Prince William and Duchess Kate welcomed their second baby. And like monarchs previous, the new princess received three names – Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Last week we, too, named our second daughter due October 1st. She also has three names and so does our first daughter. Of course in our minds our baby girls are ever as much princesses as Princess Charlotte, but that’s not why we gave them three names. Frankly, our reason is much less romantic than following royal tradition.

  • Egg Salad, Azaleas, Ferns, and the Masters

This past weekend possibly ended John’s favorite weekend of the year. That is if you don’t count every weekend in the fall that UGA is playing football. Masters weekend.

For those of you not from the south, or who aren’t remotely interested in golf, the Masters is arguably the most prestigious, and most beautiful, golf tournament of the year. It’s in our home state of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia, where my sister-in-law lives, nonetheless, and in encompasses pretty much everything southern. Including egg salad, azaleas, and ferns.

  • College Football . . . Around Here, More than a Past Time

When I met my husband four years ago, this is how he introduced himself,

“Don’t bother inviting me to a wedding on a Saturday in the fall because I won’t be there!”

And this is exactly what he meant.  This statement was actually the source of our first big fight as a married couple when my best friend got married that year, in September, during one of the biggest games of the season, but that’s a story for another day!  With that one exception, in the fall we always block off the weekends to watch our beloved Georgia Bulldogs!

John grew up going to the Georgia football games and spent many days in the front yard pretending to play football in Sanford Stadium.  We both went to the University of Georgia (now a long time ago), and we got married in the chapel on campus.  So for us it is more than football, it is more than a team, it is more than a school.  It is a central point from which so much of our lives originated.

So today begins college football season for the Georgia Bulldogs!
