  • My 9 Most Favorite Podcasts

    Hi Readers! Will you do a HUGE favor for me? Will you please take this very, very quick 4 question survey for me about the Triple Braided blog? Thank you a million!!!

    Anyone who knows me well can tell you that I am totally addicted to podcasts. They are the best part about having an iPhone. I can now listen to pastors and writers and bloggers from all around the country (and even world) while brushing my teeth!

    If you’re not familiar with podcasts, they are digital files – like audio or video files – that can be downloaded onto a portable electronic device. And of course, there’s a podcast app. Nowadays, many churches have their weekend sermons available for download as podcasts for you to listen to or watch anytime you want. Many writers, bloggers, and business people also produce podcasts.

    My favorites change every so often, but here’s what I’m listening to now:

    Pastors

    1. North Point Community Church {Andy Stanley}

    This one’s a staple. I am slightly biased because this is where I went to church when I lived back home in Atlanta. But besides that, Andy Stanley is still one of my favorite pastors. What I love about his sermons is that they are rich in the Bible but very practical. After listening to one of Andy’s sermons, I feel like I’ve learned something new about the Bible and I know how to use what I’ve learned in my life! A supplement to the weekend messages is the Your Move podcast by Andy. It is from past sermon series.

    2. The Village Church {Matt Chandler}

    Oh wow!! I can’t say enough! Right now this is my absolute favorite pastor to listen to! I appreciate the depth of Bible teaching that Matt Chandler uses. After listening to a sermon, I feel like I’ve been in a seminary class. I also appreciate his no-nonsense approach. He talks about tough topics and doesn’t apologize for it or go for a “feel good” approach.

    3. Ask Pastor John {John Piper}

    With Matt Chandler, this is a top favorite! And it has its very own app. Who know how you have these questions you want to ask your pastor but never get the opportunity? Like “Would you attend a gay ‘wedding’?” Yes, that’s on there. If I have a quick question about something, I check here first just to see what John Piper has to say about it.

    4. Bayou City Fellowship {Curtis Jones}

    This pastor I found out about through reading Beth Moore’s blog. He is Beth’s son-in-law. I’ve listened to him a few times, but I really like his messages. I tend to like pastors who dive head first into the Bible. Curtis does that.

    5. Life Church TV {Craig Groeschel}

    I haven’t listened to Craig Groeschel in a while , but I do like his preaching. In my opinion, his style is a little easier on the brain, meaning that it’s not as deep maybe or theological as say Matt Chandler, but I still recommend him!

    6. Focus on the Family

    This one is because I need all the help I can get being a wife and mother! These speakers aren’t pastors, but it’s still good, Biblical information.

    Just for Fun

    7. The Simple Mom {Tsh Oxenreider}

    Do you know Tsh from The Simple Mom blog? Well, she does a very fun blog about, well really, anything! From blogging and writing to traveling and renovating homes to public school and homeschool, she talks about all of it. The format of her podcast is her and another blogger talking just like they would talk if they were sitting together over coffee. It’s a lot of fun!

    8. The Big Boo Cast {Melanie Shankle “Big Mama” and Sophie Hudson “BooMama” }

    This one’s just fun! It’s a new one for me, I haven’t listened for long, but this two moms talk about everything, too. And they do it with a lot of humor! When you want to relax, listen to The Big Boo Cast!

    Blogging/Writing

    9. This Is Your Life {Michael Hyatt}

    How can you go wrong with Michael Hyatt, right? Every one of his podcasts are very practical and at the same time inspiring. No matter what “business” you’re in – even the stay-at-home-mom business – you can glean tons of wisdom from Michael Hyatt.

    And here is one that I want to check out but just haven’t yet – The City Church by Jude Fouquier. Have you listened to him? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

    This list is obviously not exhaustive! What would you add? What are your favorite podcasts?

  • Do You Need to Hear God’s Voice?

    Have you ever needed to make a decision about something – something that you wanted badly but weren’t sure if it was God’s will or not? So in your desperate attempts to hear His voice you start looking for Him everywhere. Maybe you even start manipulating circumstances so that it seems He’s speaking through them.

    Well, that’s been me, too, and today I’m at Encouragement Cafe sharing this story with you – “God Speaks Through License Plates” – and talking about how to not misinterpret God’s voice.

    Will you join me there? And even share with a friend?

  • SmartPhone Method for Memorizing Bible Verses

    So who doesn’t absolutely LOVE their SmartPhone? I know I do! It’s become even more important than my purse! In all honesty, it’s sometimes too important. I definitely have to bring in the addictive reins some days.

    But today I want to share with you a very positive use of your SmartPhone. Now I have an IPhone, and I really don’t know a lot about technology. I don’t even know which IPhone I have! So I’m guessing this will work with other SmartPhones, but I’m not sure. You’ll have to check.

    I have two plastic index card boxes that are stuffed full of Bible verses. I have used he “index card method” of writing down and memorizing Bible verses for years, and I still use this method sometimes. I tape them to my bathroom mirrors. I fold them so that they sit up on the kitchen table. I have even kept them in my purse.

    As time has gone on, however, I wanted a method that was a little easier to manage than carrying around an index card or a stack of index cards. Since my SmartPhone is always with me, I came up with a SmartPhone Method for Memorizing Bible verses. (more…)

  • What’s Holding Me Back from God?

    This past week I began a Proverbs 31 Ministries’ Online Bible Study. We’re reading Lysa Terkeurst’s book What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. I already had the Kindle version of the book but hadn’t read it yet, so this was the perfect opportunity to do so. I have never done a Proverbs 31 online Bible study or any online Bible study for that matter. So far it’s been very rewarding and a lot of fun. But most importantly it’s already stretching me to say “yes” to God starting with this question, “What’s holding me back from God?”

    "Proverbs

    If you’ve been around here some you may know that I have an intense desire – I call it conviction – to stay-at-home full-time with our new baby girl. My husband has come to realize that’s it’s important, also, but he still feels the stress of carrying all of the finances. So he’s asked me to find a part-time, work-from-home job.

    And I did. Actually I don’t even feel like I “found it”. I truly believe it was orchestrated by God.

    However, it is completely – and I mean completely – out of my comfort zone! I’m on a team of wonderful, Godly women (one of which I met at the She Speaks writing conference over a year ago. She’s my partner.), but I am an independent owner of a business. Me! A business owner! An entrepreneur! I have a few degrees in teaching kids how to read. I know NOTHING about business!

    So why would God bring me to a business where I have very little experience or knowledge? (more…)

  • Your Prayers Mattered – Thank You

    Dear Blogging Friends and In-Real Friends,

    Last night we arrived home from Burkina Faso. My mind is over-filled with stories and faces and now memories.  Over the next several days I will try to pour out my mind into words and pictures so that I can share them with you.

    But for now I want to thank you deeply for being my prayer warriors.  In some ways our trip was smoother than previous trips our church has taken, and with each blessing we experienced I couldn’t help but think of you – my fearless, prayer warrior friends back home – who I asked to pray for us. Your prayers were felt so deeply, and each face you will see through the pictures I share was blessed because of you.

    Whether I know you personally in real-life or through our blogging friendship, please know how much I appreciate your prayers.  Our team and the people we met in Burkina are a testament to God’s gracious relationship with us through prayer.

    Your prayers mattered greatly.

    With Love,

    Brenda

  • 13.1 Miles of Prayer

    This past Saturday I ran my first half-marathon, the Victory Junction Run to Victory Half-Marathon!

    Victory Junction is a camp in Randleman, NC for children who have chronic medical conditions and illnesses.  The camp was donated by NASCAR driver Richard Petty, and his wife Lynda, in honor of their grandson, Adam Petty.

    Running a half-marathon is a goal that I have had for myself for a long time.  I started running in my early twenties, and ever since I have wanted to run this race.

    However, my reasons for wanting to run it in the past are drastically different from my reasons for running it today.

    Beginning probably ten years ago, running became a trend.  It suddenly became the exercise of choice.  No longer did people call themselves “joggers” or say, “I’m going out for a jog”, but that were overnight runners, and they went out for runs.  I was one of these people.  Running was fairly inexpensive, I got a lot of bang for my buck as far as burning off a lot of calories, and I liked saying that I was a runner.

    Over the past couple of years, though, maybe since my husband’s heart transplant, I’ve begun to develop a different perspective about this body God has given me.  I have started to see it as a gift and me as a steward.

    So this past weekend I did not run to burn calories or get puffed up with pride.  I ran to honor God.  I ran to be a good steward.  I ran out of sincere gratitude for what I’ve been given.  And I ran for all the people who will never run this side of Heaven.

    My dear friend, Laura, who ran this race with me, had a wonderful idea and one that I used during the race.  We ran each mile for a different person or group of people, and during that mile we prayed for them.

    This is my 13.1 Miles of Prayer:

    Mile 1: Jesus

    • The Cross
    • My Savior
    • My Friend

    Mile 2: John

    • my beloved husband
    • the 43 days he was in the hospital and couldn’t run

    Mile 3: My Dad

    Mile 4: My Brother

    Mile 5: My Sister-in-Law, Cathy

    Mile 6: My Sweet 6 Month Old Nephew, Ryan

    Mile 7: John’s Family

    • My in-laws
    • My sister and brother-in-law, Jamie and Will
    • My niece and nephews, Georgia, Rod, and Jensen

    Mile 8: My Friends

    Mile 9: Burkina Faso, West Africa

    • Our trip in November
    • Our team
    • The people we will meet

    Mile 10: All People Who are Disabled

    • There was a long, tough, tough hill on this mile.  The young man I met last week, and thoughts of all the people in the hospital got me up this hill.

    Mile 11: Those Who are in Slavery/Human Trafficking/Oppression

    Mile 12: Me

    • My vocational calling
    • My relationship with Jesus
    • My forgiveness

    Mile 13: Jesus

    • The One who carries me
    Thank you, Jesus, for this body and for my health.
    May I continue to honor you with it and bring you glory through it.
