  • What I’m Giving Up On as a Mother this Mother’s Day

What I’m Giving Up On as a Mother this Mother’s Day

The other day I said to John, “You know, I signed up for Facebook eight years ago and a lot of my friends’ children were preschoolers. Now they’re almost teenagers. How is that possible?” Of course eight years ago I was newly married staring into an unknown future of chronic illness, endless nights at Duke hospital, and a heart transplant. So a lot can happen in eight years. But when it comes to children you expect time to stand still. And it never does. This Mother’s Day I’m giving up on making time stand still.

  • A Prayer for the Childless on Mother’s Day

My lifetime has not been childless. I was only without a child for a season, even though I didn’t know at the time that it would only be for a season. So I don’t write this prayer with any sense of truly knowing what’s it’s like to never have a biological or adoptive child. I write this prayer out of my own past memories on Mother’s Day and the feelings I felt. I write this prayer because my heart aches for those of you who do not have children, for whatever reason, and who desperately want them. This is the prayer I’m praying for you.

  • When You Have Nothing More to Say about Motherhood

Mother’s Day is tomorrow, and I feel I should write something about motherhood and being a mom because I’m a writer and I have a blog, so isn’t that what I should do? Not to mention I found out just this past Wednesday that I’m having another girl and today we decided on her name.

But to be honest I have nothing more to say about motherhood. Everything has already been said.

    Motherhood seems so cliché.

  • Weekend Prayers and Links

May I ask, when did every season of the year become busy? Growing up it seemed that there were only two busy times – back-to-school and Christmas. The rest of the year was ordinary and slow.

It’s only February, nothing important has happened for two months, and yet I feel like I am gasping for rest. Even when I have restful times, I’m not truly resting. My mind is jumping to the next chore, project, or event.

  • Weekend Prayers and Links

Can I just tell you that Lent completely snuck up on me this year. I mean, I’m embarrassed to admit this, but as I scrolled through my Facebook feed yesterday I saw a post about Ash Wednesday and had to remember what day it was and if THIS Wednesday was the Wednesday they were talking about. It was.

Can I also admit I immediately felt burdened by it? Easter is my favorite holiday, truthfully, not in a “I just want to be different” sort-of way, so I love that in less than 40 days it will be here. But, right now I’m exhausted. I’m bogged down with so much life stuff that I feel like I can’t give Lent one ounce of me.

This is partly because I am in Bible Study Fellowship which is great, and I’ve recommended it so many times, but it is intensive weekly Bible study. There’s no extra time in this toddler mom’s days for a Lent study, too.

So what do I do? I start a Lent study anyway, of course – She Reads Truth to be exact.  I don’t know why I do this to myself. Sometimes I wonder if it’s to subconsciously set myself up for failure.

  • Are Christmas Cards Worth It?

As a single woman I always felt silly sending Christmas cards.

I had a dozen reasons why I shouldn’t – they cost money, they take time, and then of course the reason that was my reason for not doing a lot of other things too – Christmas cards are for people with families.

Are Christmas Cards Worth It for Single Women

Today it’s Single Saturdays at Woman to Woman Ministries, and I’m sharing my answer to the question “Are Christmas Cards Worth It for Single Women?” Head over there to read more, and don’t forget to leave a comment. Do you send Christmas cards to your family and friends?
