Instagram has replaced Facebook in my life. This is a confession I’m not proud of, but I confess nonetheless. I’m loving Instagram. The pictures of perfectly organized pantries, stacks of books people are reading, and of course, an inside look of celebrities’ lives, create an endless trap of mindless entertainment. Anyone with me?
Why is she getting that? She doesn’t deserve it! I’ve been asking God for that for years. I’m the one who is over here working and sacrificing! She doesn’t do half of what I do! God answers everyone’s prayers but mine! I must be doing something wrong! Or she’s the one doing something wrong! That’s it. There’s more to all these good things happening in her life!
My thoughts overtook me as I got off the phone with a friend. She was moving into her forever house in the neighborhood I once commented to my husband was my “dream neighborhood.” For months dissatisfaction had been growing with our house and neighborhood. I typed the last word of my text and hit send. Then my heart raced, my palms began to sweat, and a knot grew in my stomach. Why did I just tell her all of that? I thought to myself.
The text message was to a good friend. A friend I respect. A friend I trust. A friend who gets me. But in that moment I felt vulnerable, like my closet had been opened a little too far.

As God is teaching me to be more attentive to the rest of the body, I would like to share with you some simple steps we can take.
I confess. I am living as an island.
Many of us do it. We go to church with plastic smiles and act like everything is ok. We don’t want to admit that our lives are messy or overwhelming or sinful, so we cut ourselves off and don’t allow anyone to connect with us. What’s more, we don’t make much of an attempt to connect with others either.

Honestly, when I was single I was not intentional about serving married women. I babysat some, but never for free, and I mentored a few of my friends’ daughters. But that’s about it.
However, I noticed a trend as I got older and remained single. Even then I verbalized it like this: “The longer I remain single, the more selfish I get.” I didn’t want to be selfish. I wasn’t setting out to be selfish. But by default I became more selfish. When you are the only person you have to take of every day, it happens. It takes intentional effort to not become selfish.
